While researching historic letters of General Lafayette, I found this in the Billings family archives:

20. Manuscript volume bound, June-July 1920.

     - Clippings from Bridgeport Telegram

          (Bridgeport, Conn.) "My first newspaper endeavours."

Apparently, he was once an editor for the Telegram.  His father (same name) was the first librarian of the New York Public Library and a surgeon who was instrumental in organizing the National Library of Medicine in the 1800’s.
